Tips to make sure that your home or office’s lawn is the crowning glory
Spring is around the corner and budding gardeners and landscapers are already pruning, mowing and trimming to get their gardens and lawns in tip-top shape for the summer.
A beautiful lawn which resembles a bowling green is often one of the most coveted features of a beautiful tended garden, but it takes time, effort and patience.
Follow these tips to make sure that your home or office’s lawn is the crowning glory of the neighbourhood.
1. Get your settings right
Start with your Honda lawnmowers’ settings. Taller grass is healthier, so you want to mow your grass on the highest setting, which is probably 3.5 to 4 inches.
Tall grass keeps the soil cooler, keeping it moist for longer and encouraging the proliferation of soil microbes. Soil microbes are extremely important when you want a healthy lawn, they convert nutrients from the soil into a form that plants can use. All this encourages grass to spread into bare spots. It also promotes deeper root penetration, which is the secret to drought resistance.
2. Go green
Speaking of microbes, never apply pesticides, insecticides or fungicides to your lawn. Those kill living things (those good microbes plus earthworms that naturally aerate soil) that keep your soil richer. Roger Innes, greenkeeper at the Randpark Golf Club says that they don’t use any fungicide on their fairways and greens.
“You need microbes and bacteria for the soil to be healthy and when you add chemicals like fungicides, you destroy the biodiversity of your soil and make it sterile.”
Honda’s lawnmowers are also ideal to keep your lawn and garden green, not only in it’s appearance, but also on an environmental level. Honda’s world-renowned easy-starting lawnmower engines deliver smooth, quiet and reliable four-stroke power and ultra low emissions levels.
The Impunzi 25 and UMK435-brushcutter is ideal for trimming those hard to reach corners. It’s environmentally friendly with low emissions, less noise and low fuel consumption. You don’t need to mix any fuel, as it is a 4-stroke motor and it runs on unleaded fuel and oil separate.
3. Go easy on the sprinkler system
Your lawn does not need to be watered constantly during a long dry spell.
The heart of the plant underground can stay alive and dormant for months. If you want to keep your lawn green all year long, water deeply but infrequently. It is better to run the sprinkler for an hour once every week or two than for 10 minutes every day. Think of it this way: You always want to encourage roots to grow deep. If the soil is dry below the roots, they won’t go down. And the deeper moisture will work its way upward as the soil dries from the top.
4. It’s elements, my dear
It’s not only the geeks from The Big Bang Theory that should know the relationship between nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
If you are going to use fertilizer on your lawn, look for the three numbers that tell the percentage of the three main ingredients: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The three are always given in that order. Thus, if the bag says 10-6-4, it means the stuff inside is 10 percent nitrogen, 6 percent phosphorus and 4 percent potassium. Also go easy on the nitrogen, grass needs less nitrogen than you think. Try an organic lawn food blend or use cottonseed meal or dried poultry waste. Most of the nitrogen in these is water-insoluble; it stays put and is released over a month or more, providing nutrition to the plants in small doses.
